Samuel Gridley Howe. actually made the 2month ocean crossing to enlist in the Greek cause. GreekAmerican ties were sketehy until the 1860s. when Ambassadors were exchanged. Greek emigration to America really did not begin until the 1890s although a littleknown expedition of Greeks. led by Dr. Andrew Turnbull. an English adventurer. settled in Florida in the 1760s but was decimated by illness. The great wave of Greek immigration reached America in the first two decades of the 20th century. We have known them and their families as good citizens. closeknit family people. industrious. and ambitious for the education of their children. In metropolitan Detroit. the GreekAmerican community numbers approximately 30.000 to 40.000.
