Michigan to commemorate the restoration of Lithuanias independence and to pledge ourselves for continuous fight for Lithuanias freedom from Soviet Unions occupation. do hereby state as follows: Whereas. the 16th of February. 1971. marks the 53rd Anniversary of the restoration of independence to the more than 700 year old Lithuanian State. and Whereas. on June 15. 1940. the Soviet Union forcibly occupied and illegally annexed the independent Republic of Lithuania. which fact had been officially confirmed by the findings of the Select Committee on Communism Aggression of the House of Representatives. 83rd Congress of the United States. and Whereas. the subjection of peoples to alien subjugation. domination. and exploitation constitutes a denial of fundamental human rights. Is contrary to the Charter of the United Nations. and is an impediment to the promotion of world peace and cooperation. and Whereas. the Soviet Union. through a program of deportations and resettlement of peoples. continues in its efforts to change the ethnic character of the population of Lithuania and the other Baltic States. thereby committing the offense of genocide. and Whereas. the Soviet invaders are unable to suppress the aspirations of the Lithuanian people for freedom and the exercise of their human rights. as most recently demonstrated by the dramatic hijacking of a Soviet aircraft to Turkey by Pranas and Algirdas Brazinskas. the heroic attempt of defection by Simas Kudirka and the unsuccessful attempt of escape to Sweden by Vytautas Simokaitis and his wife. Now. therefore be it resolved. That we demand that the Soviet Union shall withdraw Its armed forces. administrative apparatus. and the Imported Russian colonists from Lithuania. thus permitting the Lithuanian people to -freely exercise their sovereign rights.
