Mr. Speaker. today we should take note of Americas great accomplishments and in so doing renew our faith and confidence in ourselves as individuals and as a nation. A poor Scottish immigrant. Andrew Carnegie. came to the United States in the 1850s and supported his family as a telegraph boy. Shortly after the Civil War. he entered the steel industry and 15 years later he reached the top of the ladder. At his death Carnegie had become the richest man in the world and had given 90 percent of his wealth away. He founded over 2.800 libraries and established various institutes. endowment funds. and great modern foundations.
