Speech #910333109

Although it is impossible to know the facts involved in the incident and subsequent trial. because Russia continues to be enveloped in a shroud of secrecy. it is not difficult to understand and sympathize with those who in seeking a new life are forced when denied such liberty to resort to unusual efforts. For many years. I have been concerned with the treatment of minority groups. and in the Soviet Union the Jews are the worst treated minority group. In the past. I have served as a vice president of the International Rescue Committee and more recently expressed our Nations views on the issues of prisoners of war. refugees. and asylum as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations. I urge that our Nation. through its people. its Congress. and its President. plead with the Soviet Government on behalf of the condemned and sentenced men to seek some mitigation of their fate.
