The recent reports indicating a new wave of antiSemitism in Russia are most distressing. . The 6ircumstances surrounding -the trial of 34 Jews suggest that their major crime" is their desire to. expres themselves in thier own religiouscultural heritage. or to emigrate to Israel -where they can do so freely.-Both of these alternatives ire guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. a United Nations document signed by the U.S.S.R. Denial of these basic rights today at.best reminds us of mans short memory about acts against humanity and at- worst rekindles fear of a recurrence ofone of mans darkest hours in Nazi Germany. Elie Wiesel. a survivor of the horrors * of Auschwitz and noted author. has written that civilizationis but "foam that crests the waves and vanishes." Once again civilization is being challenged. it failed in World War II when it tolerated the intolerable.
