It is the latest in a tragic history of malevolent accusation. There has been no relationship established among the 34 people other than that they have all petitioned either the United Nations. the Human Rights Commission or the Soviet Government. or have asked the Soviet Government to leave the U.S.S.R. for Israel. They have all signed some kind of appeal for emigration because they wanted to live as Jews and could not do so in the U.S.S.R. All are said to have Israeli relatives. A background statement on Soviet antiSemitism and the facts of the present trial has been published by the American Jewish Conference on Soviet Jewry.
