Speech #910310433

Hoover countered by saying. which had more than an element of truth. that they might be able to achieve a more immediate or shortrange military objective. but if the objective of ending World War I was to bring about a world in which we could have peace. then we would be sowing the very seeds for World War II by this very kind of inhuman action of forcing starvation and death upon civilians and nonmilitary people. So it is in the case of the Middle East that we have human suffering that is going on unabated. that has been accepted as a way of life. that we. as a leading ethical nation of the world. have permitted. I believe we have reaped a lot of military plums for not acceding to human needsnamely. food. clothing. and shelter for displaced people who are called refugees. I would like to feel that our committee could give not only a sympathetic hearing but some action that would bring about relief. I would venture the guess that it would ease military tensions and bring about a solution a little sooner than if we permitted this kind of infestation of poverty and hunger to go on. which would only cause more hostility and resentment on the part of the guerrillas of the Middle East.
