Mr. Speaker. today is the 52d anniversary of Latvian Independence Day. Unfortunately. this event was commemorated only in the free world areas with a necessary feeling of sadness. as Latvian refugees keeping alive the historic nature of the occasion. could not truly celebrate. The people of Latvia itself are not permitted to celebrate their true Independence Day which. incidentally. was achieved at the expense of the original Russian Communist Government. At the present time the Soviet Union. in its deliberate policy of suppressing the nationalistic spirit is continuing to eliminate the structure of the fictitious independence of the Soviet Socialist Republics. and create regional governmental structures rather than the historic nationality lines.
