Whether Columbus was actually the first or second. or even the third voyager to reach our shores is purely academic. It detracts nothing from the intrepid admirals daring and determination. It subtracts nothing from the everlasting significance of his unique and monumental achievement. In saluting Columbus we honor not only the man but the legacy which he bequeathed as the Father of Immigration. We honor all immigrants. for the faith and courage of those who followed Columbus remind us of his undaunted will. In this spirit they eventually created our democracy. dedicated to the principles of freedom and opportunity. But we do more than show our gratitude for their countries contributions.
