To those of us in the Ohio delegation. the loss is especially keen for we knew MIKE KIRWAN as a personal friend as well as a colleague in Congress. MIKE KIRWANS story personifies the opportunity for success in America. Born in WilkesBarre. Pa.. 83 years ago. the son of an immigrant coal miner. MIKE KIRWAN worked in the mines as a child and later as a brakeman and oil field hand. He knew extreme poverty and the impact of the depression years. but with his initiative and fighting spirit. he literally scoffed at the hard times and. instead. took advantage of the opportunity to represent others who had been subjected to -the same hardships.
