While the creation of the state was welcomed by many Jews. the programmatic and doctrinaire aspects of Zionism were vigorously resisted. World Jewry today comprises about 14.000.000. and of these only 2.500.000 reside in Israel and share its citizenship. This ratio cannot be explained simply by the limited size of the state and the emigration restrictions in eastern Europe. It substantiates the basic but obscured fact that the vast majority of contemporary Jews have actually "affirmed" the Diaspora. that they have opted in favor of the broader and deeper dimensions of the world outside Israel. Their support and llpservice in behalf of the state does not diminish the more significant and profound reality that they instinctively resist the call to a diminutive Jewish polity.
