Baltic States Freedom Day. which is observed annually and which will be commemorated this year on Sunday. June 14. marks the 30th anniversary of a tragedy in the history of Lithuania. Latvia. and Estonia. On June 14. 1941. the Soviet Union forces overran these three countries which were enjoying independence and freedom since 1920. Innocent Lithuanians. Latvians. and Estonians were ruthlessly deported to Siberia. causing the death of tens of thousands of freedomloving people. We Americans have not forgotten the tragic events that took place 30 years ago. And these events give us all cause to reflect on the fragile nature of human freedom.
