Session #91 · 1969–71

Speech #910168726

The Russian occupation force left the country that day as Estonia declared its independence and began to prosper as an individual nation with its own sense of commitment. In two decades Estonians built a remarkably solid nation while enjoying the life of prosperity and liberty. Today Estonian Americans note that achievement with pride. But Estonians also view today with sadness. The anniversary is a reminder of confiscated property. destroyed homes. burned lands. deportation. slave labor camps. and death of family and friends. That litany of horror began in 1940 with the invasion of the Red army. Thirty years later. the Soviet Union and its army still occupy Estonia.
