These two anniversaries once again are observed while these proud people are still trying to regain the independence which they lost during the dark days of World War II. The Communist regime did not come into power in Lithuania. Latvia. and Estonia by legal or democratic process. The Soviet Union took over these three countries by force of arms and In violation of international treaties binding Soviet Russia. The Soviets have deported or killed hundreds of thousands of Lithuanian inhabitants since 1940. The Baltic question remains unresolved. We must find a way to lift the yoke from these oppressed peoples.
