I join with many of my colleagues and with the free people of the Ukraine and their descendants in the United States and other nations. in marking the 52d anniversary of the proclamation of independence of the Ukrainian National Republic and the 51st anniversary of the act of union under which all Ukrainian lands were united into one independent and sovereign nation. The independence and the act of union were proclaimed in Kiev. capital of the Ukraine. on January 22. 1918 and 1919. respectively. It is now more than 75 years since the first Ukrainians came to the State of North Dakota and they were followed in later years by refugees from Soviet oppression. These industrious. gallant. and patriotic people have. through the many years. made a great contribution to our State and Nation. We have no finer group of citizens.
