Session #91 · 1969–71

Speech #910139651

Mr. President. in recent weeks the administration has issued glowing reports on the progress being made to resettle Vietnamese refugees. The latest report. given me last week by AID officials. suggests a very substantial reduction in the overall total of registered refugeesfrom 1.446.000 in March to some 537.000 in October. This progress is attributed to two factors: the lower level of military activities in recent months and successful pacification efforts. In view of past experience with official statistics on refugees and civilian war casualties. the judiciary subcommittee on refugees. which I serve as chairman. has undertaken an investigation of the latest report. And I must indicate in all candor. Mr.
