Session #91 · 1969–71

Speech #910122880

We have all too easily assumed that a general spirit of "good will." or "faith in democracy" or other such vague moral concepts would carry us along very nicelywithout our having to get down to the brass tacks of teaching the young the reality of God. of teaching the young the Ten Commandments. of teaching the young to pray. If we presently reap a world not unlike the world of Rome in the period of its decaya luxurious. disorderly. cruel and disintegrating societywe should not be surprised. In spite of all the indignities which were heaped upon the Catholic Immigrants who came to this country by the older Americans who feared them. may I say that it is a tragedy today that the ChriStian morality and outlook which characterized our traditionally Protestantoriented public school is no longer with us. The old Protestant insistance which we found in the public schools of earlier timesteaching the reality of God. the importance of the Commandments and the importance of prayerhas given place to a vague secular humanism proving incapable of meeting the demands of a sound social order andindeedmeeting the deep inner need of so many of our young people for basic rootS. What is to be done?
