Speech #910097997

Certainly. this national holiday should remind us of the magnificent contribution which the countrymen of this great navigator have made to this Nation. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting with an impressive number of Italian press representatives in Naples and alluded to the Italian contribution to America with this statement: Because of being brought up in Brookyln with its large Italian American population. I soon learned the importance of the contribution which Italian immigrants have made and are still making to the life and welfare of our country. More recently as I watched. almost in holy awe. our astronauts making their historic explorations of the moon. I could not help but wonder how significant it would have been to have seen Christopher Columbus step ashore in the New World.
