Session #91 · 1969–71

Speech #910087010

Mr. Speaker. yesterday I introduced a resolution calling for the United States to urge the United Nations and the International Red Cross to condemn the inhumane treatment of Cuban political prisoners. This resolution calls attention to the fact that the Castro Communist government has starved. beaten. executed at random. humiliated. and inhumanely treated some 800 political prisoners beyond human endurance and that a large number of prisoners have. since August 28. been on a hunger strike. crying for deportation or death in protest. I was personally visited by some 10 Cuban refugees and U.S. citizens who have sons. brothers. or other relatives in La Cabana Prison. most of whom are on the hunger strike and they have personally advised me of incidents of unbelievably inhumane treatment in the prison. These are documented cases. Already some six deaths have occurred since the August 28 starvation protest started.
