Session #91 · 1969–71

Speech #910084264

In America they did not find the streets "paved in gold" or money "growing on trees" as many Europeans still believe. but they were faced with many hardships in a new and strange environment. Since they were young in mind and strongbodied and because of the rugged life in their homeland. they did not despair and were determined to work hard and to have patience to overcome the obstacles confronting them in the new land. The American way of life. however. with its freedom of expression. the vast opportunities and privileges it provided. soon had its effect. Mr. Speaker. this is the first book written in the English language about the Slovenian immigrants and their homeland and Marie Prisland has done a remarkable job. I commend it to the attention of my colleagues.
