Session #91 · 1969–71

Speech #910060479

We have always provided a welcome for these people. from the very outset of our history as a country. It must be recalled that the very first settlers in New England. the Pilgrims. landed at Plymouth because of religious persecution at home. The great State of Pennsylvania was founded by a man leading his people from religious persecution and into freedom. Our whole history has been the story of a people welcoming as friends those who were oppressed. downtrodden. persecuted. It might be well. too. to remember that many of the millions who have immigrated to the United States did so because of military conscription at home. primarily in the middle and southern European countries.
