It is the teaching profession. and in particular. the millionmember National Education Association. In 1857. Mr. Speakerthe same year the Supreme Court ruled that Dred Scott is a propertyRobert Campbell. a Negro immigrant from Jamaica. became a charter member of the National Education Association. In 1866. while the Southern States were still smoldering after the horrors of the Civil War. NEA President James Wickersham called for and got an association platform supporting a system of free public education for every boy and girl in America.
