Educational facilities were expanded. progressive social and labor legislation was adopted. and marked achievements were made in literature and the arts. However. during the last quarter of a century the lack of accurate* information and the flood of Soviet propaganda has tended to obscure the current status of the inhabitants of this Baltic nation. It is apparent that a sizable number of natives have fled their country or been deported from their homeland. Those who remained do not enjoy the full freedom they experienced during the two decades preceding World War I. The United States has never recognized the annexation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union and still maintains diplomatic relations with those who represent the former independent government.
