Since this time. the Ukraine has been under Communist yoke but within the hearts of its people here and abroad the love of liberty and freedom is strong. Because of this love of liberty and desire for freedom the Ukrainian people have paid a high price. There have been mass deportations of Ukrainians to Siberia. intellectuals have been abused and jailed. there have been mass trials and then ruthless persecution of suspected Ukrainian leaders. But despite cruelty and systematic genocide by the Soviet oppressors. the spark of freedom still smolders in the hearts of Ukrainian patriots. It is appropriate that on this day. we who live in this great United States that is dedicated to the principles of justice. liberty. and freedom. remember and honor the courageous people of the Ukraine.
