I have introduced legislation several times in the past to secure this day as a national holiday. and so this law marks the fulfillment of a dream which I have shared with many proud people throughout this Nation. Christopher Columbus was a complex man. courageous and eager for adventure. yet at the same time. a singularly sensitive man with a deep religious faith. Clearly. these are not the characteristics of one man alone. but also the characteristics of the countless millions of immigrants who have followed Columbus to the shores of this Nation. His bold and daring venture has become symbolic of the ventures made by those of many countries in their search for "a new world" here in the United States.
