I headed a study mission to the Soviet Union and Scandinavia last fall. and had the opportunity to meet with Crown Prince Harald and other top officials and public figures in Oslo and Bergen. During the Nordic fest. citizens of all national origins displayed their civic. artistic. and culinary talents. and Decorahs wonderful spirit was evident everywhere. Indeed. the national rosemaling competition and exhibition. the truly fine collection of immigrant artifacts in the NorwegianAmerican museum. the beautiful window displays in all of the downtown store windows and the excellent smorgasbords in the churches as well as many other activities made this a truly outstanding event for the thousands of visitors. including my wife who. being of Norwegian descent. particularly enjoyed herself. I wish to congratulate at this time everyone who helped in the conception and execution of this most memorable event. Efforts of this kind of civic cooperation can well serve as a model for other communities everywhere in our country.
