It was my good fortune. as chairman of the Subcommittee on Migratory Labor of the Committee on Labor and Public Welfare. to have Senator ROBERT KENNEDY as a member of my subcommittee. He brought to our work an electricity that inspired more than hopeit inspired action. We worked closely together during hearings in Washington and. more important. in California. I emphasize the field trips because it was in the fields that I saw ROBERT KENNEDY endeavor to obtain a meaningful understanding of the migrant and his family. He learned first hand of the overwhelming problems faced by migrant families. He experienced the voices and lives of hungry. poorly educated. poorly housed. unhealthy children and parents. And he shared their interest in obtaining human dignity through meaningful collective bargaining with their employers.
