What is required is the creation of a climate in which the Negro can achieve his own salvation. in which he can stand on his own feet and achieve his own selfrespect. What is required from the white majority is to make such an environment possible. Mr. Davis candidly recognizes that the argument for the creation of a hospitable environment for Negro achievement often meets the complaint that Negroes. like impoverished immigrant minorities of previous decades. should be left to their own devices for advancement. But times have changed. and as Mr. Davis points out. the conditions which face the present Negro slum dwellers are greatly different from those which confronted the white man who worked. his way out of the slum.
