Session #90 · 1967–69

Speech #900241357

I am particularly pleased that the Judiciary Committee has recommended that Columbus Day be established as a national holiday. My congratulations go out to the distinguished gentleman from New Jersey for his perserverance and diligence over the last 20 years in seeking to have Christopher Columbus so honored. All of us are immigrants and we derive our strength as a nation from all nationalities. Surely. the opening of the New World was one of the greatest milestones in the history of mankind. By honoring Columbus. we recognize the many contributions made by those of Italian ancestry who followed Columbus to America.
