Session #90 · 1967–69

Speech #900238240

Many of our citizens and. unfortunately. some of our Nations leaders openly predict more violence and even condone it. stating we will ultimately experience fullscale war. race against race. generation against generation. The same people say that by nature man has inherent traits of savagery. Pointing to our Nations history. they maintain that violence and the United States have had parallel growth. They cite the American revolution. the persecution of various immigrant minorities. the Civil War. the bloody days of the Reconstruction. and the violence of the early American labor movement as examples that we must use naked physical force as a cure for our problems. As one militant put it. "violence is as American as cherry pie." I cannot accept such pessimism. The end does not justify the means.
