It has been just 20 years since the establishment of the State of Israel was proclaimed. and in those years. dominated by war. the Israelis have carved out a land of milk and honey from what is a barren desert. What makes Israels independence day especially significant to us is that. much like the United States. the Israeli society is a blend of European. Middle Eastern. and African cultures. Immigrants to the state have come from many areas and have brought their traditions and mores with them to mix into the melting pot that is Israel. Ten percent of the Israeli population of 2.7 million are Arab Christians. Druzes. and Moslems. more than half of the Jewish population originated in North Africa and the Middle East.
