Session #90 · 1967–69

Speech #900192866

Mr. Speaker. yesterday I introduced special legislation (H.R. 14945 to authorize the immediate entry into the United States of 2.000 natives of Italy and their families who have lost their homes and livelihood as a result of the recent Sicilian earthquakes. My bill would make available 2.000 special immigrant visas. and the wives and children of these persons would also be issued special visas. This special legislation is necessary to provide entrance into the United States to these unfortunate families so that they will not be charged against the Italian immigration quota. This proposal is not without precedent. When volcanic eruptions in the Azores occurred in 1958. similar special legislation was enacted to help the Portugese victims of that disaster.
