Speech #900167072

Mr. Speaker. the ticking off of the 200 millionth American by the census clock today was a symbolic moment when all of us can reflect on the history. the growth. and the future of this great Nation. In the 177 years since the first census. we have grown by more than 196 million peoplewe have attracted and absorbed millions and millions of immigrantswe have spanned a continent. and with the admission of Hawaii we have gone part way across the Pacific. We have shown the world that the great democratic experiment can work. that we Americans can thrive and prosper on diversity. I do not suppose that anybody in the past saw his times as particularly easy or problem free. or that his age was the golden one.
