Yet today the military rulers in Saigon enjoy little public enthusiasm. Meanwhile. antiAmerican sentiment among nonCommunist South Vietnamese is rising to unprecedented levels. Something must be drastically wrong with a policy which has incurred the enmity of the South Vietnamese intelligentsia. has devasted much of rural South Vietnam. has created millions of refugees. has cost thousands of lives and billions of dollars. Yet all we hear from the White House is a clamor for more of the samemore American troops or more bombing of the North. If the Republican Party is to be true to the American people and to our national tradition. it must offer a choice not an echo to the counterproductive and dangerous Vietnam war policy of the Johnson administration.
