Session #90 · 1967–69

Speech #900148425

Stories of incidents of persecution and discrimination have reached such a proportion that the U.S. Senate has. on several occasions. expressed itself formally on this issue. This Nation of ours--a "nation of immigrants" as President Kennedy called itunderstands the rich heritage that different cultures and traditions give to a country. And we realize as well that the culture and tradition and religious observances of any one group of citizens must be completely respected and fully protected or else the entire nation suffers an irreparable loss of freedom. Unfortunately. evidence indicates that the Soviet Union has confiscated synagogues. closed Jewish cemeteries. arrested rabbis and lay religious leaders. and discriminated against Jews in cultural activities and access to higher education.
