I am today introducing a bill to amend section 203(a) (5) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This bill provides that any fifthpreference aliensbrothers and sisters of U.S. citizens and their spouses and childrenwhose visa petitions were filed prior to July 1. 1966. are deemed to be immediate relatives under the provisions of section 201(b) of the act. Not only will this legislation alleviate the desperate situation in which fifthpreference Italians now find themselves. by placing them on an equal basis with other fifthpreference aliens. but will also remove the cruel and unnecessary hardship for many of our own citizens with relatives abroad and reinforce our policy of reuniting families.
