Session #90 · 1967–69

Speech #900116646

Mr. President. several days ago. I introduced a bill to provide for the waiver of the English language requirement in the Immigration and Naturalization Act for persons 50 years of age with 20 years of residence in the United States. Since that time. the bill has received widespread support across Texas. where a major portion of the 10.000 people who would be affected reside. The citizens of my State have shown increasing concern about the situation of the older people who were arbitrarily excluded from the exemption in 1952. I hope that the Senate will take early action to correct this situation.
