Session #90 · 1967–69

Speech #900093417

There is. of course. no evidence to support this contention. In fact. the United States moved to assist the Hungarians in every possible way short of the use of force. The United States vigorously protested the invasion of Hungary. led the fight in the United Nations to censure the Soviet Union for the Hungarian invasion and to secure their withdrawal. and offered a sanctuary in the United States to more than 200.000 Hungarian refugees. The reason for the failure of the Hungarian Revolt lay not so much in Washington. as in the deserts of the Sinai Peninsula. The spectacle of Western forces committing aggression there may well have emboldened Russians to retract her proffered appeasement offer to Hungary.
