Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890277222

But. it does not fully describe J. Howard McGrath as I knew him. For he was the son of an immigrant who. by diligence. acumen. and sheer drive. rose from extremely modest circumstances to be one of the most powerful men on the national scene in our country from Rhode Island since Senator Nelson Aldrich was called the general manager of the United States. Howard McGrath never forgot his love for Rhode Island and. during the last few years. he spent more and more time in the State he loved so much. Those of us in Rhode Island political life will miss his brilliant dinner speeches which sparkled many an otherwise dull evening.
