Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890276171

Often. too. we overlook or forget the part that labor has played in moving the United States toward what President Johnson has called the Great Society. Without the talents. skills. and muscles of labor. the discoveries of scientists. the plans and blueprints of engineers would be useless. The role of organized labor in bringing about social reforms also merits recognition. Labor leaders for years have spearheaded the battles for such goals as medicare. immigration reform. social security. Federal aid to education. conservation. slum clearance. the war on poverty and civil rights. I am happy on this occasion to reaffirm my faith and pride in labor. and to extend to every working man and woman my sincere best wishes on the celebration of Labor Day 1966.
