Indeed. our meeting today as the freely chosen representatives of a free people draws its inspiration in large part from the councils and assemblies of the days of Cleisthenes and Pericles. Such is the heritage of the AHEPA membership. But the Greek immigrants to this country in the 20th century furnish us with an example which ought not to be overlooked because of our reverence for that ancient society. In this day in which minority groups are demanding so much from the government and so little from themselves. I would loudly acclaim these immigrants who came to our country with little but their talents and willingness to work. Without asking for Government grants. special privileges from society. and the promise of security without contribution. these peopIe started at the bottom and worked hard. saved their money. invested in our free enterprise system. and proved once more that America is the land of opportunity. Today there are few communities which do not have examples of their success.
