Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890266262

President. there is a serious weakness in the bill as it has come before us. both from the standpoint of equitable recognition of the interests of all Americans. and from the standpoint also of the special interests of the people in -congested metropolitan centers. A great deal of the misery and squalor that infects our great cities today has its origins in depressed rural areas. Many millions of the inhabitants of our great city slums are recent migrants from farms and Indian reservations. During the past two decades. there has been a sharp decline in employment in agriculture. Millions of rural jobs have been eliminated by modern farming machinery and lessening agricultural opportunities.
