Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890261425

Every schoolboy knows how great is the debt of Western civilization to fifth century Greece in art. letters. and government. In the 2.500 years which have passed since then. the Greek contribution to civilization has not diminished. From the struggle for Greek independence. and the hardships suffered by Greek immigrants to the United States in the 19th century. to their brave resistance to oppression in World War II. we have as much to learn from our modern Greek compatriots as from the ancient Greek forebears of learning and culture and democracy. The Order of AHEPA embodies the finest of the Greek tradition to which we are thus indebted. and represents it to us in 20th century America. It represents American and Canadian citizens of Greek descent. and it is open to people from all backgrounds and all walks of life.
