Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890238878

Thus. we find now that the New Haven road is directed to continue to operate the same trains that the Boston & Maine is authorized to discontinue. although the tracks of both lines are necessary to the operation of the trains. It is not my purpose today to pass on the essentiality of operating these trains. although. as I have pointed out. they constitute the only rail passenger link between Washington and Montreal and Ottawa. I shall not dwell on the national security aspects of this servicealthough the State of Vermont is expected to accept refugees from southern New England in time of crisis. Nor do I know how thousands of persons from southern New England and the eastern seaboard. will get to the Montreal Worlds Fair next year if all train service is discontinued. The point which I wish to stress today is much more important than the operation of one. two. three. or four trains.
