Permanent land titles have been given to peasant farmers now holdIng only provisional claims to the land they till. Some 500.000 acres of former French lands are in the process of being sold to small farmers on terms which they can afford. Another 700.000 acres of stateowned land will soon be distributed among 180.000 landless Vietnamese. most of whom are refugees from Vietcongcontrolled areas. At the end of this past April. incidentally. there were 933.000 such refugees. of which about 500.000 were still living in temporary shelters. The others have either returned to their villages or been relocated. U.S. directdollar assistance provides construction material. medical facilities. clothing. personnel costs. and nearly $8 million in foodforpeace commodities.
