Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890224756

Unlike the excitable Buddhists. who have used armed force. selfimmolation. hunger strikes. rabblerousing. boycotts and blockades in a so far futile effort to upset the South Viet Nam administration. the Catholics simply paradedwith signs asserting their position in contrast to the Buddhists. "If communism lives. the nation dies." said one placard. "The people of Viet Nam thank the Allied forces." another saidThe paraders were peaceful. disciplined and purposeful. Their leaders say they represent about two million of their faith. Many of these are refugees from communist North Viet Nam. a fact which would enhance their militant support of the war against communist invasion. The Catholic demonstration wont directly alleviate the troubles with the Buddhists whose interference with the war effort could have no ultimate result except their own destruction. along with that of the rest of the country. But the march does help put the confused picture of South Viet Nam in perspective.
