Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890219816

Where else in the world can the citizens of a country be at the same time deeply committed to sharing in the destiny of their adopted country and deeply concerned by the fate of their country of origin? When we speak of "hyphenated Americans"--of PolishAmericans. of IrishAmericans and of ItalianAmericanswe speak of them with pride. not shame. and realize that we are evoking the very essence of America. We also realize that this Nation of immigrants. nourished by so many cultures and strengthened by the particular genius of many different peoples. can never completely turn inward on itself. and can never remain indifferent to developments in those many countries throughout the worldwhether Japan. Hungary. Poland.
