Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890217091

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these. the homeless. tempesttost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door. These lines depict the heritage of our country. for from the beginning. we have been a nation of immigrants. coming from many lands. with differing customs. languages. attitudes and beliefs. For more than 200 years. before we became a nation. they came to these shores from every corner of the world seeking opportunity and freedom. It was that desire for opportunity and freedom which gave rise to our Declaration of Independence in 1776.
