Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890206984

Despite these tribulations. the spirit of the Polish people remains undiminished. for they are confident that somehow in the years ahead they will once more have an opportunity to breathe the air of independence they have so long cherished. This year Poland observes her 1.000th birthday. and even in her infant years the bravery and stoicism inherent in the Polish people of our time were being molded in the struggle for freedom. Under Boleslaw the Great. the Poles established the first effective barrier in Eastern Europe against the ferocious Asiatic hordes that sought to invade. And down through the years Poland has refused to be destroyed. asking only for the liberty which God would grant to all men. Polish warriors played an important role in Americas fight for independence. and Polish immigrants had a vital part in the building of our great Nation. Their progeny have included outstanding scientists. musicians. painters. writers. athletes. teachers. and representatives of all other careers and professions. Today people everywhere who love freedom join in salute on Polish Millennium Day.
