Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890206141

The year 1915 is the year of national tragedy for the Armenian people. In April of that year some 2.000 prominent Armenians in Turkey were arrested and imprisoned by the Turkish Government. From the moment of their arrest they were held incommunicado. and a few days later all of them were deported to distant parts of Asia Minor and executed there. The perpetration of this crime on the part of Turkish authorities proved the beginning of the end of some 2 million Armenians in Turkey. In less than a year. all these Armenians were uprooted from their homes. some deported to distant parts of the Ottoman Empire. while others were massacred in the neighborhood of their homes. This fiendish policy of genocide of an entire ethnic group through wholesale massacres. and through deportation and famine. was so thoroughly and cruelly carried out that in less than a year the once thriving Armenian communities in all parts of Turkey had been wiped out. When the First World War came to an end historic Armenian towns and villages in which Armenians had lived from time immemorial had become desolate and deserted places. In this unprecedented holocaust more than 1 million Armenians had lost their lives. and those surviving were on the verge of starvation.
